Places of Interest near the Conference venue*

Kiev (Kyiv) is the capital of Ukrane and Euro 2012 host city. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. With its unique attractions, numerous parks and gardens, modern art galleries and exhibition centers Kiev is the face of the country with a great future. Each year about 2 million people visit kiev to see it’s numerous sights. We offer you the list of must see places in Kiev.

  • This is one of the central and most picturesque areas of Kiev. Here is located St. Sophia Cathedral with a great bell tower and the monument to Bogdan Khmelnitsky. St. Sophia Cathedral was built in 1037 and is under UNESCO protection.

  • St. Michael Golden Domed Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries of Kiev. The fame to the main temple of the monastery – St. Michael’s Cathedral brought its mosaics and frescoes. According to art historians, mosaics and frescoes of St. Michael’s Cathedral have opened a new type of painting in the evolution of ancient Kievan Rus. In 1935 the cathedral was destroyed and rebuilt in the second half of the 90s of the 20th century.

  • Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra monastery was founded in the 11th century. Its construction lasted for 9 centuries. The monastery complex makes a great impression even today. Especially well known are the underground caves of the monastery. On any given day numerous domes can be seen from almost anywhere in Kiev. Most of the buildings of the Monastery were built in the 17-18th centuries and belong to the style of Ukrainian Baroque.

  • Its name Andrew’s descent received in the 18th century from St. Andrew’s church, located at the beginning of the descent. Today, Andrew’s descent is a place with a partially preserved architecture of 18-19th centuries. Along the streets there are permanent exhibitions and sales of paintings by artists and folk art products. Here you can also buy various souvenirs.

  • Mariinsky Palace was built in the late 17th century by Rastrelli. The Palace is located in the park bearing the same name. In the palace are held solemn state events – awardings, receptions, meetings of official delegations and the palace bears the title of being the “presidential” palace. Now the palace is closed for restoration.

  • Golden gate is the main gate of ancient Kiev. They were reconstructed during the construction of St. Sophia Cathedral. In the late 17th century the front gate had still parts of the fortifications, but in the middle of the 18th century they were destroyed and covered with earth. The gates “came to life” for the first time in 1832 during excavations, and were completely renewed in 1982.

  • This tract is located in the origins of the river Lybid, three centuries ago it belonged to the St. Michael Cathedral. Now it is a museum complex. Sloboda is a Cossack settlement of XVII-VIII centuries, a unique complex, even unique for Ukraine! It has more than 90 different objects.
